Montana-Rolled Fly Rods: Introducing Livingston Rod Company

Welcome to Livingston Rod Company: Montana-Rolled Blanks, Built for the Way We Fish

There’s a reason anglers return to the Yellowstone River year after year. It’s a place shaped by weather, water, and a pace of life that reminds you to slow down and fish with intent. Livingston Rod Company was born in the middle of that landscape. Every rod we build reflects the rivers we guide on, the fish we chase, and the people who come here looking for something genuine.

This is our first blog post, and it marks the start of sharing more about how we build rods in Montana, what goes into each series, and the places we fish that shape our designs.

Montana-Rolled Blanks From Start to Finish

All of our graphite and glass blanks are rolled here in Montana in partnership with longtime rod designer Dusty Smith. Every blank is hand-rolled, hand-finished, and built without paint so the natural material can do the talking. The unsanded finish gives each rod a quiet, classic look that feels right on western water. Light swing weight, clean recovery, and honest power are the themes across our lineup.

We build rods for anglers who care how a loop forms, how a rod loads on a short shot, and how it holds together when the wind runs down Paradise Valley. These details matter, especially on rivers like the Yellowstone, Firehole, Soda Butte, and the spring creeks that inspired many of our tapers.

A Look at Our Four Series

Over the coming weeks we’ll dive deeper into each series, but here’s a quick overview.

YS Dry Fly – Graphite

A responsive, crisp dry-fly rod designed for clean loops and long reach on technical water. Perfect for the Firehole, Henry’s Fork, Soda Butte, and fall BWO days on the Yellowstone.

YS Universal – Graphite

A versatile all-around stick that can fish dries, nymphs, and small streamers without hesitation. If you’re packing one rod for a Montana trip, this is it.

Western Glass – S-Glass

Smooth, progressive, and surprisingly powerful, this series is built for anglers who like feel but still need to deliver the fly accurately in changing conditions. Great for pocket water, creeks, and early summer hatches.

Headwater Glass – S-Glass

Short, tight, and designed for small creeks and clean roll casts. These rods belong on alpine streams, meadow creeks, and the tucked-away water you don’t talk about.

Why We Build Rods This Way

We guide on these waters, and we fish them year-round. That means we design rods to match real situations: long dry-fly feeds on DePuy’s, heavy stonefly rigs in June, soft presentations in late fall. A rod is only good if it helps you fish better. That philosophy drives every taper, every material choice, and every build we send out the door
