YS Universal: The Rod I Rely on Every Day I Guide the Yellowstone

When you guide full-time on the Yellowstone, you don’t have the luxury of switching rods every time the wind shifts or the fish change their mind. You need one setup that handles whatever the day throws at you. For me, that rod is the YS Universal. It’s the first rod that goes in my boat in the morning and the last one I take out at night.

This series is exactly what the name says—universal. It can fish a dry, a dry-dropper, a nymph rig, or a small streamer without acting like it’s out of its comfort zone. I’ve had this rod in clients’ hands during hopper season, during big stonefly drops, during cold shoulder seasons when you end up nymphing most of the day, and it never feels like the wrong choice.

The thing I appreciate most is how predictable it is. When a client picks it up, they settle in fast. The rod loads clean, recovers steady, and lets people make the cast without overthinking it. In a drift boat, where timing gets quick and angles change fast, that kind of consistency matters more than people realize.

A lot of that comes from Dusty’s design work. He has a knack for building rods that actually match how we fish out here. Not overbuilt. Not showy. Just honest, functional tapers that make sense on western water. You can tell the YS Universal was designed by someone who understands long days guiding and knows exactly what a rod needs to do from the rower’s seat.

I’ve fished this rod on windy afternoons in Paradise Valley. I’ve fished it during slow July mornings when you’re trying to lay a small dry tight against the grass. I’ve fished it during fall streamer days when you want something light but still strong enough to move a fly. It handles all of it without complaint.

That’s why it stays in my boat every single day. If I need a client to switch rigs, I don’t think twice. This rod can handle whatever we tie on next. It makes guiding easier, and it makes the day better for the angler holding it.

If you want one rod that truly covers the way we fish the Yellowstone and most of Montana, the YS Universal is the one I’d hand you. It’s reliable, it’s versatile, and it does the job the way a guide needs it done.
